Equity Diversity Inclusion, EDI Panel– People Who Came First
At the 2021 Conference, we talked about the role of university boards in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion. Much has transpired since then, including the adoption by many Canadian universities of the Scarborough Charter on anti-Black racism and Black Inclusion in Higher Education. Universities continue to prioritize and evolve their EDI goals and are implementing initiatives to increase engagement of under-represented, equity-deserving groups in order to create inclusive and diverse education environments.
Although much work is underway, significant challenges exist, related to implementation of initiatives, identifying key indicators of success, developing advancement strategies, and dedicating resources to evolve ideas to mature strategies.
Our panel includes people who are pioneers in the EDI environment, champions of change, ground breakers, people who came first and are making a difference. Their involvement in advancing EDI can teach us how to do and be better. They will reflect on the challenges they have faced, the changes they have fostered and what our universities need to do, keep doing, or change to move forward.
