Donald L. Ireland, FSA, FCIA, is a senior vice president in our Calgary office. He provides actuarial and pension consulting services and coordinates other consulting services for selected key clients.
Don specializes in assessing and advising on all aspects associated with pension programs, including design issues, risk factors, financing/investment matters and governance/communication needs. Don has been involved in providing input on a variety of pension industry matters, and is Chair of Aon's National Task Force on Governance.
Consulting assignments have included serving as the account manager on many large accounts involving multi-disciplined teams, facilitating sessions with employees, management and pension committees on pension-related matters, identifying and advising on risks associated with retirement programs, advising on appropriate funding and expensing of defined benefit pension arrangements, consulting to plan sponsors on proper governance, carrying out the conversion of defined benefit pension plans to defined contribution pension plans, pension plan wind-ups, preparation of actuarial evidence, assistance in counseling employees on government and private pension benefits, designing and implementing supplemental retirement plans, and evaluating investment managers and administrators for pension plans.
Don earned a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Alberta and joined Aon in 1987. He became an Associate of the Society of Actuaries in 1988 and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries in 1993. Don has 23 years of pension consulting experience.
Don is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a member of the Association of Canadian Pension Management where he currently serves as the Chair for the national conference and sits on the Alberta Regional Council. Don is also a former member of Aon's Canadian Retirement Practice Council and currently serves on a number of Aon's Retirement Practice task forces. As well, Don currently has served on the Canadian Institute of Actuaries Task Force on the Role of the Pension Actuary, and is a current member of the Investment Committee of the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation.
